In an exclusive and intimate “safe space” setting, Goldie Scholars had the opportunity to interact with two commercial real estate legends on the topic of negotiating on December 17, 2018. The Goldie Initiative’s 2018 Shero Award Winner, Sheli Rosenberg, met with Scholars, shared advice on how to negotiate in any situation, and provided feedback on negotiation scenarios prepared by Scholars.  The Goldie Initiative Founder and Chair, Goldie B. Wolfe Miller, also provided valuable insight and advice. 
Following are key takeaways on negotiation success:

  • Create a “win-win” situation. Be smart, professional and honest. 
  • People like doing business with people they like.  Think beyond this deal – create relationships, build a reputation. 
  • Be prepared. Know the details and what you are willing to give up. 
  • Any deal is the same; principles apply to any situation. Keep it simple. 
  • Know your client. Know what information you can get from the people who help you provide services.
  • Grasping for too much can kill a deal.
  • Don’t lose your cool, don’t cry. Raising your voice can be ineffective. 
  • Learn from each experience. 
  • In a hostile situation, take the high ground; try to turn it around. 
  • Diffuse a negotiation with humor – bring jokes. Have a sense of humor!
